SmartDays is the Demand Response Program offered by Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). When you're on the SmartRate plan, you pay a reduced rate in exchange for minimizing your electricity usage up to 15 days a year.
SmartDays can be called any day of the year including weekends and holidays (although events on these days are much less likely to occur). A maximum of 15 SmartDays are called each year.
You will be notified by text, email or a phone call by 2 p.m. on the day before a SmartDay, so you can plan to shift or reduce your electricity usage the following day.
On smart days, you pay a $0.60/kWh SmartDay Rate in addition to your current rate, for five hours, from 2 to 7 p.m.
On regular days, you receive a rate reduction of $0.024 kWh on your energy usage from June 1 to September 30, except from 2 to 7 p.m. on SmartDays. You also receive an extra rate reduction of $0.01/kWh for energy usage billed at Tiers 3 and 4 during all hours, from June 1 to September 30.
